Reading, Writing and UOI- One of the great things about our current unit of inquiry is that it is fully integrated into our reading and writing. Students are researching a system or technology from a past civilization and using this information to create a report. Student will report on this system or technology with information from the past, present and share their ideas about what it could be like in the future. We will also create digital timelines on sutori.com.
In reading, we have been practicing fix up strategies for when we have a word or words we don't understand. We refer to this as a "clunk" and students have a variety of strategies to help them figure out the meaning of these words. This helps when it comes to the very specific vocabulary of ancient civilizations.
In writing, we have been working on citing our sources. We are working on taking notes in our own words and giving credit to where the information is coming from. We are using a Google Docs add on called easybib. Students will also create an account in the library with Ms. Graff.

Academic Honesty Policy
It is a BIFS policy that all students in Grade 4 and 5 read and sign our Academic Honesty Policy. This is a great time to introduce this to our students, since we are researching information and using technology daily.
I have sent the policy and contract home with your child today. Please read over this with them this weekend. Please sign and return the form on Monday.

Math
We have multiple ways for students to practice a variety of math skills. Another way that students can do this both inside and outside of the classroom is with online practice. This week students received their IXL logins and began practice in class and at home for homework. Ixl is a great program for students to practice any math skill. Please make sure you have read the letter explaining about the program that came home with your child this week. If you did not receive the letter, I have included it below. Your child can access their individual login in their email.
